What is a line art portrait, and is it right for your space?

A custom line art portrait of a husky, printed on matte canvas in a natural wood frame, on a pale wall beside the dog it was made from.

A line art portrait shows a person or a pet in one flowing line, with no shading and no color. The best ones keep enough detail that you know the face at a glance, while still reading clearly as a single line. Made to order from your photo and printed on matte canvas or as a framed print, it suits a hallway or a bookshelf and anyone who leans toward abstract art.

What is a line art portrait?

It is a portrait reduced to its outline and its character. Where an oil-painting-style piece builds a face out of color and light, a single line portrait does it with one continuous line that loops and doubles back to find the eyes, the ears, the set of a jaw. The result is mostly open space with a single line running through it.

That restraint is the appeal. A line portrait is quiet on a wall, and it is as close to abstract as a portrait gets while still being unmistakably someone you love.

What makes a good one?

We hold our own pieces to a simple test, and it has two halves.

  • The detail can still be seen. A good line portrait is not a few loose curves that could be anyone. You should be able to find the look in the eyes, the fold of an ear, the shape of the face.
  • It is obviously a single line. The drawing should read as one line traveling across the page. If it stops looking like one line, the idea is lost.

The weak versions fail one half or the other. Some are so simple that the subject disappears. Others add so much that the line stops being the point. The pieces worth living with sit between the two: not too simple, and clearly one line.

Which photos make the best line art portrait?

The photo matters less than people expect, but three things help.

  • A straight-on face. Looking toward the camera gives the line both eyes and the full shape of the face to work with.
  • A calm background. A busy room behind your subject competes with the features you care about.
  • Well-defined features. Good light and a sharp image let the line pick out what makes this face this face.

If your favorite photo is none of those, send it anyway. The studio works well with imperfect photos, and the preview costs nothing, so the honest way to find out is to try it.

Where does a line art portrait look best at home?

Our two favorite places are the ones people overlook.

A hallway. A hallway is a wall you pass many times a day and rarely stop at. A line portrait is made for that kind of looking. It reads in a second.

A bookshelf. A piece displayed on a bookshelf, rather than hung, is one of the nicest ways to live with line art.

One place we would steer you elsewhere is the bathroom. If that is where the piece is going, our bathroom portraits were made for that room, and they are the better choice there.

Who is it for?

It is for someone who appreciates abstract art. That is the clearest sign a line portrait will land, whether the piece is for your own wall or wrapped for someone else. As a gift it has an advantage over louder styles: it sits comfortably in almost any home.

If the person you have in mind prefers warmth, color and a classic finish, a different style will suit them better. If they like things spare and a little unexpected, this is the one.

How do you order a line art portrait from a photo?

Ordering takes a few steps.

  • Find a photo you like.
  • Upload it on the product page.
  • See your free preview in about a minute.
  • Look through the sizes, and the frame colors if you are choosing a framed piece.
  • Order the one you want.

The thing we wish every customer knew: you are not limited to the first preview. Make a second and a third, from the same photo or a different one, until you find your match. Nothing is printed until you choose.

You can see every format and start your own from the single line portraits collection.
