What makes a great pet photo
You need one good photo. Not a folder of them, and not a studio session. One photo, taken with a little care, does the job.
A great photo for a pet portrait is:
- Taken in natural light. Daylight near a window, or outdoors, shows your pet's true colors and the real texture of their coat.
- Close to your pet. The nearer you are, the more detail there is to work from. Let them fill the frame.
- From any modern phone. Any phone made in the last ten years captures more than enough. A professional camera is not necessary.
- Indoors or outdoors, your choice. Where you shoot only matters if you want the surroundings to be part of the piece. Otherwise it makes no difference.
- True to their quirks. The tilt of their head, the set of their eyes, the look that is theirs and no one else's. That is what we want to keep.

Why one clear photo beats a studio session
You do not need to book a photographer. A candid phone photo, taken close and in good light, consistently holds its own against a polished studio portrait. The reason is simple: the more of your pet the image shows, the more there is to work from. Clarity matters more than production value.
What does cause trouble is a busy photo. When a portrait is meant to feature one pet, every extra element competes for attention. A second pet, a hand or a leg at the edge of the frame, or a cluttered background can all pull focus. Even a partially visible person can lead to unexpected results. Keep your pet the only subject in the frame, and the studio's focus stays entirely on them.
A portrait from real life: meet Loki
One of my own favorites is a single-line portrait of Loki, my dachshund puppy. I sent a close-up of her looking straight at the camera, sitting on her bed. What came back was an artful interpretation of her face that I love, and, more to the point, it was unmistakably her. Not an approximation, and not a generic puppy. You could read her exact expression, her face clear and unobstructed.
That last part is the whole secret. The photo was close, it was clear, and nothing blocked her face. That is what made the finished print sing. Choose a photo where your pet's face comes through cleanly, and you are most of the way to a portrait you will want to live with.
Your photo does not have to be perfect
The biggest thing standing between people and a portrait they love is the belief that the photo has to be flawless. It does not.
We see wonderful results from photos where the pet is not looking at the camera at all. The aim is to reduce the chances for error, not to chase a perfect shot. So if your favorite photo, the one that captures them best, happens to be a side glance or a half-turn, use it. Their character matters more than their pose. The same is true of an older photo you treasure. If it is the one that looks most like them, it is worth sending.
