Made to order, explained: how a custom portrait comes together

Made to order means exactly what it says. Nothing in the catalogue sits in a warehouse waiting for a buyer. Each portrait begins the moment you send a photo, and it is composed, printed, and finished for your order alone. If you have only ever bought things that ship the same day, the rhythm is a little different, and a little more considered. Here is what to expect, start to finish.

It starts with your photo

Everything begins with an image you choose: a face you want to keep close, a pet on the windowsill, a moment you do not want to lose. You pick the style and the format, whether that is a framed print, a matte canvas, or a poster. The photo you send is the raw material for the whole piece, so it is worth choosing with a little care. If you want help deciding, we wrote a short guide to choosing the best photo to send.

The studio composes your portrait

Once your photo is in, the studio interprets it through the style you chose and prepares the portrait at full resolution. This is the considered part: getting the composition, the colour, and the feel right, so the finished piece reads as something made for you rather than something stamped out. You are not waiting in the dark while this happens. The result comes back to you as a finished preview.

You see it before anything is made

This is the step that makes made to order feel safe rather than risky. You see the finished portrait on the page before you order. Nothing goes into production until you approve it. If it is not quite right, there is room to refine until it feels right. The portrait that arrives is the one you signed off on, not a surprise.

We make it, finish it, and ship it

When you approve, the piece is printed to order on materials chosen for the long term, framed where the format calls for it, and sent to you. Production runs a few business days for most formats; framed canvases and larger pieces take a little longer. After that, transit within the United States adds a few more days, and shipping in the US is free. You will get a tracking link by email when the piece ships.

What to expect, honestly

  • A short wait, by design. Because each piece is made for you, it is not instant. The trade is a portrait that is yours alone rather than one off a shelf.
  • A preview you approve. You are never committing to something unseen.
  • A piece made once. Because your portrait is printed individually for your order, it cannot be returned for a change of heart once it is approved and made. That is the nature of custom work.
  • A studio that stands behind the work. If a piece arrives damaged, with a printing defect, or different from what you ordered, we replace it free of charge. Write to hello@geisti.com within fourteen days of delivery and we will make it right.

Ready to start

Choose a format and the rest follows. A framed print gives you a clean, gallery-ready piece; a matte canvas gives you warmth and texture. To see the range first, the oil-painting collection is a good place to begin.

Made to order is slower than buying off a shelf, and that is the point. The portrait that arrives was made for one image, one order, and one wall: yours.
